“Oh the Saxons came to Duncombe,

They thought they’d win the day,

But the warriors of Duncombe,

Brought spear and sword to play.

The armies clashed, the legion smashed,

What a heavy price they paid,

As the spearmen of old Duncombe,

Sent the Saxons on their way!”

“Come on,” Merlin roared, clapping his hands enthusiastically, laughing the whole time, and the men responded in kind, glorying in the simplicity of the lyrics. “Here’s the chant again, join in!”

Bellicus took up his refrain from the start and this time the sound was near deafening as everyone shouted along.

“Hoi! Ho! Hoi! Ho!”

As before, the chant was repeated multiple times, but it rose in pitch now until many of the soldiers were almost screaming in delight, laughing as they choked on their own rough, untrained voices and Merlin started the final verses.
